The MusicianFunction introduction

This week's new Apple Arcade release is an interesting little game called The Lullaby of Life that aims to lift its players' spirits in novel ways.

Hailing from developer 1 Simple Game, based in Jalisco, Mexico, this one's perhaps best described as a music-driven puzzle adventure where you'll work to re-energise a long-dormant universe.

You play as BomBo, a strange creature whose small tunes can light up the world around him, returning music, colour, and life to his surroundings by precisely timing his musical notes. It sounds and looks very pleasant, and I'm quite excited to try it myself when it arrives on Apple Arcade later today.

Beyond a Steel Sky, Creaks, and Necrobarista are certainly hard acts to follow, but The Lullaby of Life seems so completely different to any of those that comparisons aren't at all fair. Still, Apple Arcade has been on a wonderful roll recently, so it'd be great to see The Lullaby of Life continue that upwards trend.

You'll find it available for download later today from the App Store, though given the fact that it's an Apple Arcade release, you'll of course need an active subscription to play. That'll set you back $4.99 a month or $49.99 a year.

I'm curious to see when Apple's change of direction for the service will become apparent in its (almost) weekly games. The last several releases have all been narrative-driven games that don't necessarily lend themselves well to the high-retention models and regular updates of, say, Grindstone or Sneaky Sasquatch.
Searching for more top-quality puzzle games? These games would only show to those who had paired a pad with their Apple TV.

Apple has since revised the developer documentation, and now says "your game must support the Apple TV remote".

This means that while developers can still use gaming controllers, they can't require them. So all games must be playable with the remote - no matter how ill-fitting it may be.

How does the remote stack up as a gaming controller? Not terribly well: the only inputs it has that developers can make us of is a small touch panel that can be tapped or swiped, and an accelerometer.

You're not going to be playing Dead Trigger 2 with that.

Interesting games that make use of the unique remote will inevitably appear. Much like how innovative games like Eliss, Angry Birds, and The Room work best on touchscreens. But your dreams of playing more traditional games on your telly may have just been dashed.

Unless you, like, buy an Xbox or something. Just sayin'

"I hope you'll look on our bookshelves as your own," said Anne.

Light in the Dark is a casual puzzle about helping peculiar light-based creatures called totems to find their babies. It should be coming to Android, iOS, and Windows Phone this month.

It's a casual puzzler and the first game from Dreamgate Studios which, it turns out, consists of people who worked on XCOM, BioShock, and Fallout.

I've spent a little bit of time with Light in the Dark and enjoyed its light-based puzzles. You have to drag the parent totems around the columns, pits, and corners inside old tombs in order to light up the babies to compete each level.

The light that hits the baby has to match its colour. This starts off simply enough, but you'll very quickly have to get to grips with mixing colours to produce new ones.

There are also three stars in each level that have to be lit up when the level finishes in order to be collected. Once again, the light that hits them must match the colour of the stars.

Fireproof Games, the developers behind the Gold Award-winning The Room series, have announced a new title called Omega Agent, a Samsung Gear VR exclusive.

Omega Agent will put you in control of a jetpack-strapped spy, who explores an isolated, "cold-war super-spies" training facility on a remote island.

Zip around with your jetpack, taking in the view and taking on some "daring missions" - all in VR!

The Samsung Gear VR was announced early Wednesday, a virtual reality headset built for the also newly announced Galaxy Note 4. Read more about the announcements here.

Omega Agent will be available to play at EGX London, September 25th-28th, along with The Room Three, also by Fireproof.

If you think E3 is rough now just imagine what it would have been like 100 years ago. For a start, there wouldn't even be any videogames to report on.

Alexander Shen's new puzzle game E3 1915 celebrates this year's E3 by taking us back a century in time. Why? Why the hell not?

It's a grid based puzzle game in which you play a reporter sent off to E3 to collect the hottest scoops.

All this involves is grabbing the three newspaper icons in each level and reaching the exit. The catch is that each square you move consume one food item. If you run out of food then you die.

Later levels also add crates to push, ladders to climb, and clouds of tuberculosis to avoid.

So, yeah, not much has changed from the E3 back then to the E3 now - you still have to push your way through people and avoid unpleasant odors in the air.

Oh, and for the record, E3 didn't start until 1995. Yes, this game is entirely fictional, unsurprisingly.

You can download E3 1915 for free on Google Play right now.
IndieGames.com

Fancy slicing up some pirate monkey zombies? Well, Mass Creation has now released the PS Vita remake of Draw Slasher on Android.

It's a beat 'em up that relies on your finger swipes to command Hanzo with jump, dashes, dodges, and slices as he journeys to save his family.

We gave the game a Silver Award on Vita, with our reviewer saying there's "some serious fun to be had here."

However, when it arrived on iOS last year, it fared less well. In that review, we remarked that the game "doesn't quite have the skills to really entice you in for more."

Captain Jim was still more excited when he discovered that Owen Ford was what he called a "real writing man." He gazed at him as at a superior being. Captain Jim knew that Anne wrote, but he had never taken that fact very seriously. Captain Jim thought women were delightful creatures, who ought to have the vote, and everything else they wanted, bless their hearts; but he did not believe they could write.
